Canon Character Application
My name is Rin and I am 19 years old. I want to join this site because I love you guys? . I have been roleplaying for at least over six years and I normally post between the three to six paragraph mark. Here is my application:
Character name: Sweden (Berwald Oxenstierna)
Age: 21
Appearance: Sweden is a very tall man with, short choppy blonde hair. He normally wears a stern (often quite scary) expression, but has a kind heart despite his misleading and intimidating appearance. Azure eyes are normally hidden behind a pair of thinly framed glasses.
He usually wears a thick and heavy dark blue trench coat due to the extreme cold where he lives. It tends to make him stick out, but the the clothes underneath are pretty ordinary, just a simple black shirt and tie with a pair of matching black pants. Occasionally he wears rather strange patterned ties that were given to him as gifts (Which he feels rather silly in, but politely wears never the less). From time to time, he will also wear a matching hat to his trench coat.
Personality: Sweden is a quiet individual, who has much to say but is normally far too shy to speak out on his views. He is often misunderstood due to his rather scary looks, but is actually quite kind and playful…though the latter can only be drawn out on certain occasions.
He has multiple hobbies he takes pride in, such as making furniture and painting. Even arguing and debating, though…normally he gets too embarrassed to actually say anything.
Occupation: Sweden is a skilled lancer. He is every bit as fearsome with a spear on horseback as he is on his own two feet. Using his height and the length of the spear to his advantage, he is usually able to knock most foes off balance to deliver a feral blow.
He has a faint affinity with ice magic, though the results are left to be desired when he uses it due to lack of practice. Over all, he makes a better fighter than a mage.
Strengths: Sweden is physically strong, having spent so many years fighting with other nations and because of this, his endurance level is high. Though perhaps all the fighting in the cold attributed to part of it as well.
He seems to have a lot of patience (though people tend to think the opposite with the scary looks they often receive.), but this is something he only gained in recent times. But, to this day there are still people who can draw out his rather fiery temper if the right buttons are pushed.
Weaknesses: He tends to have a lot to say, but usually can never bring himself to say anything. So his opinions on matters often go unheard unless, of course it is of the utmost importance. He makes attempts at least, to try and over come this. But its mostly those that he feels comfortable with that he talks to the most.
His rather imposing presence also causes problems for him, leading to many misunderstandings and misconceptions about him. For the most part, he remains oblivious to this fact leading to yet even more misunderstandings when he doesn’t realize.
Backstory: He knows his life started much earlier, but it was such a long time ago that he can’t really remember much about it. Thus, he decides to tell his story starting from the era of Vikings, during a rather turbulent time and one of the most important in his life.
He did lots of traveling and adventuring, heading south into his neighbor’s homes. Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and even heading into the black sea…none of them had been left unexplored.
He had a deep thirst for adventure, being young, strong and quite curious of the world around him.
He flourished in trading during his excursions to the south, and his home became a rather important trade center for the Baltic region in the 600’s. He was ever so proud of these accomplishments, and things seemed to be going quite well for him and this prosperity would be reaped for many years to come.
In the 11th century, Christian beliefs became prevalent in his home and magic thrived along with it. Many of his people took an interest in the new found magic, himself included. However, he would never become quite as proficient with it as he would have liked to.
Competition was rising between him and the other Nordics, and power struggles and fights were common between them. Around this time he also took an interest in Finland, and tried to expand his control into the younger boy’s country. This, in turn brought him conflict with the Kievan Rus, to which he stood strong.
In the 14th century, he would fall into Denmark’s care along with Norway. However, despite his loss of freedom, Sweden continued to try and handle things in his own fashion. Something that he and Denmark often fought over. Eventually it would lead to Sweden running away from his care all together, along with Finland.
In the 17th century, Sweden had finally achieved becoming a great European power after many long years of being extremely poor. Managing this by seizing territories from Russia, Lithuania and Poland.
But he would lose his territories outside of Scandinavia in the 18th century, due to not being able to maintain them. The loss of Finland to Russia was hard for him to accept, but being in a weakened state, it had been hard for him to do much else to prevent the loss. It was a time of much sadness in the man’s life for he had gone back to being all alone.
Later, he would show interest in trying to regain some dominance in the Baltic region by allying himself with France in the Napoleonic wars. In the war, he would attain Norway from Denmark in exchange for the northern german provinces at the treaty of kiel. The last war he would ever physically take part in would be against Norway, ending with Norway’s defeat. The union would however, be dissolved later on. But despite no longer being a combatant in any wars, he still partakes in many ‘peacekeeping’ missions.
Sample Post: It was a cold snowy night, certainly not out of the ordinary for his home. All was peaceful in the little cottage; the only noise in the house was the slight crackle of the fire and the tick tocks of the clock on the wall.
He retired inside early today to bundle up by the fireplace and read a good book until Finland returned. Hot chocolate was a given, although it admittedly made him feel a little childish. Despite it though, he kept his shelves stocked with it, if not only for him, but for Finland and little Sealand as well.
Azure eyes would eye the second steaming cup sitting on the table right in front of him. It had become habit to make two, one for himself and one for the smaller boy he shared his home with. But the other boy was currently nowhere to be found and it was growing late. He was beginning to worry a bit and pondered putting on his coat and boots and heading out to look for him.
Deciding to wait just a little while longer for his companion to arrive, the tall man would rise from his chair and move to glance out the window to look for any sign of the Finnish boy. The snow had not let up, which caused just a bit more worry to rise up in the pit of his stomach. Trails could have gotten covered (He knew Finland knew the way around his home quite well even without them, but he still worried), and there was always a slight chance that the boy could have gotten lost in the storm…
Mind made up, Sweden armed himself with his thick coat and boots and headed towards the door. However, just as he placed his hand on the doorknob, a knock would sound through the house alerting him to the boy’s presence. Turning the knob, the door would creak open and he would invite the boy in with the simple phrase of, “How have y’been?”
He did not question the boy on his whereabouts, for it was obvious to him when he saw the icicle in his hand. Ah…he wondered how many times he warned him not to do that… Never the less, he was happy to have him back home safe. That was what mattered and once the boy was inside, he shut the door to keep out the chill. “Welcome back.”
((Sweden is love!
This whole application came so much easier than the last. I guess cause I had the other one done for experience. XD; Do hope this is okay though. I sorta made the sample post correspond with Finland’s application post.))
