[/u][/center]Canon Character Application
My name is Hatane and I am fourteen years old.
I want to join this site because I'm always out hunting for roleplays to sustain my interest in something. And this is the first time I'm actually doing the formal Hetalia roleplay because one, there are really little ones out there, and two, because whenever there is one, most of the characters have already been taken. Yep. I see the potential in this developing site and I would really love to try this out.
I have been roleplaying for three years now.
I normally type around 200 to 500. words in one post. If I'm crazy and I can just keep typing, although it might come out as gibberish.

APPEARANCE
Kiku stands at approximately 165cm (5.5"), which appears to be rather short compared to other matured nations. Taking into consideration that Japan is technically a much older nation, it would seem surprising for him to be rather short for someone of his age. Then again, it possibly lies in Kiku's genes as an Asian. His hair is a glossy black, and it appears to hold a certain thickness and volume to it compared to western nations. It is short, with heavy bangs straight down serving as his fringe, while his sideburns are grown out slightly over his ears, which can be seen from the side view. The rest of his hair gathers at the back of his neck, and ends more or less abruptly. His skin is relatively pale and fair, and his eyes are small, with a brownish gradient. The gradient starts with a dark brown, and progressively get lighter downwards.
He has a rather slim build, but he gives off an aura that hints at his strength. Kiku oftens wears a japanese kimono, giving off his identity easily. The purple robe extends down to slightly past his knees, a skirt like cloth that goes to just about around his ankles. It's in a lighter shade than the purple, making the two layers very distinct. Beneath the topmost layer lies even more layers of shirts and other cloths of all sorts, and everything is secured by a brown sash slightly above his waist. Kiku wears white socks, really long ones that go up to his knees, and humble black slippers. Not worn but over him is a large straw hat, and he tends to carry a staff around with him. On it hangs various different relics and strange items that even he cannot explain.
Of course, if he isn't wearing this, Kiku is most likely wearing his usual formal attire, his navy suit. With a stiff collar, it's mostly white with long sleeves and long trousers. The buttons are rounded and plated gold, while the bands on his shoulders and his collar give him a very formal and strict air. However, beneath everything, the formal wear or the traditional wear, are scars of the oriental nation's past ever since his existence begun. From the scars left behind during the times of the feudal era, to the more recent ones, thanks to "The Manhattan Project". Kiku's lower body is scarred with the damage from the young nation's secret project, and they've remained obvious even though most of the pain has been healed.
PERSONALITY
In the past, Kiku withdrew himself from the world. This great turning point caused the current state of Japan. He's generally very quiet and he's very serious about most matters. His hobby is to analyze the situation and determine whether or not to speak. Most of the time he's too polite to reject an idea and he prefers to agree. Rarely does he state his true opinion, much to the annoyance of Vash - Switzerland. However, he regards honour to be a very important thing. One thing Kiku will never stand for is disgrace. Once disgraced, this oriental nation does not waste time to grab a knife and commit seppuku. When he doesn't know what to say, he tends to resort to using his stock phrases, which include:
"I'll try my best."
"Until next time."
"I'll think about it."
"All my answers are 'no'."
"Captain, as an honourable Japanese, I'd give him a vague answer like 'I'll completely annihilate you' or 'I'll consider it.' By the way, they all mean 'no'!"
Although, when it comes to certain subjects, Kiku is very much enthusiastic about them. Said subjects include drawing, designing minatures, creating medicine with wild herbs found about the place, and just being an otaku all around. When it comes down to it, Kiku can be very diligent and no matter how daunting the task may be, he always finds some way to get through the problem and does it to pretty high standards. Other than this, Japan suffers from the western cultural shock, especially when Italy runs around naked (although he's pretty much getting used to it after all this while.) To him, the western culture is bizarre and complicated. After all the interaction with western nations, Kiku ocassionally worries that he'll lose his beautiful tradition as he gradually opens his doors wider to other countries.
OCCUPATION
Cleric. However, for one, Kiku attacks physically instead of using magic. It is mostly when he is healing when he uses magic, which really isn't magic. The Japanese man tends to rely more on using wild herbs with medicinal value.
STRENGTHS
His determination. Kiku is down to it when he gets extremely passionate on a certain matter. No matter how difficult the situation, he persists until he gets it done, even if he doesn't like the job. For example, the time when his boss demanded for beef stew for dinner, it wasn't exactly the best thing he could wish for, but he stuck through with it and apparently invented a new dish in the process. He doesn't really look the part, but Japan can be intimidating. During the feudal era and the reign of Emperor Meiji, Japan had grown to become a strong power in the east, and his defeat of Russia had proven his skills and underestimated abilities. The defeat of England in Malaysia and Singapore, particularly, had left a very strong impact upon everyone during that time. This particularly, makes him unpredictable.
WEAKNESSES
Kiku doesn't give his true opinions most of the time. This often leaves a thin line of doubt towards him, especially since many nations still regard him to be a "rising nation in the East". Kiku oftens gives off a humble air, although beneath it appears as though he is constantly hiding some big secret from everyone, which leaves a cloud of confusion, doubt and distrust towards him. He can also be rather stubborn sometimes, especially around enemies like Russia and such. Kiku can easily backstab someone, as long as he holds a weapon, a katana preferably, which only adds to the amount of paranoia people seem to get around him. Basically, he appears to be a very suspicious and a character with a foggy background.
BACKSTORY
It all started with China. Lost and growing in a forest of bamboo, China had found him, and sooner or later, the Chinese man had become his older brother, even though he rarely appears to acknowledge it. But the truth was certain, for the truth was clear, that Wang Yao had raised him since he was young and even showed him the stepping stones to become stronger. Of course, this brotherly relationship, no matter how deep and strong, had been shattered the day Kiku attacked his "brother" and worked independently, away from China. This had not really helped his relations with his elder brother.
In fact, Kiku had not done much to make it easier for his or anyone's life. At one point of time, Japan closed himself up into his own little world of islands. There, he had been alone and during this time he managed to preserve his culture, preventing it from being spread to various other places. At the same time, he had kept people out of his own little world, making sure he would continue living in this traditional life and so that western influences could not come in. However, when Kiku had opened up his doors again, he saw a completely different world outside his house. Gradually, foreigners came and he had been afraid and worried for the safety and welfare of him and his people, but the change had managed to slip in rather easily and without too much paranoia.
During the feudal era, Japan had seen himself grow much, much stronger. However, the constant warring between his people had left Japan scarred badly. Even though the wounds had healed and they had disappeared off his fair skin, it was definitely a period of time that Kiku had suffered, as territories were claimed and stolen and then fought back for. Bloodshed was all over Kiku, and he was heavily burdened during this time. Honour and respect had become of great importance to Kiku during this time as he learnt the samurai code of honour and disgrace. It was then that Japan had remarkably risen as a power, although it was never noticed... until later.
It was 1905. Kiku had established very good relations with England during that time, and it was around this time that the war Japan had with Russia had more or less ended. Japan's victory over Russia had completely startled people, but at the same time Japan had faced an economic problem when he had thrown himself full force during the war waged against Russia for expansion in Mongolia. But Japan had proved himself to be a rising nation, and during the first World War he had worked alongside with Alfred and Arthur as he fought against Germany.
However, everything moved in a different perspective when it came to the second World War. He had waged a war against China, and his humiliating defeat left him disgraced and Kiku was reduced back to an inferior and underestimated nation. He then strictly trained himself and then using Thailand as a base, he departed southwards and promptly went on to seizing Malaya and Singapore from the Englishman's clutches. Alongside with Germany and Italy, Kiku had done amazing things, but it never lasted. Gradually, the rising costs of living made it hard for Kiku to continue occupation in these two areas, and the decisive blow from Alfred had completely crushed Kiku. It was a time of depression, but at the same time, reflection for the Oriental nation, and when he was finally able to walk again, he had changed his approach to things.
Everything went on rather smoothly from then on.
SAMPLE
The sun had risen.
As his brown eyes had opened, Kiku found himself still covered neatly in his blanket, although something was amiss. Something just was not feeling the same as before. He frowned, closing his eyes for a moment to try and think. Gradually, he found temperatures under the thick piece of cloth starting to rise, and at one point of time, it became just unbearable. With a scowl Kiku groped about for something, and not finding it, he stifled a yawn and pushed the blanket away.
His bare feet touched the wooden ground. It was then when Kiku had realised that the wooden boards felt a tad warmer than before. The cold nights had been harsh on him, wind blowing, window hinges ringing away in the silent night... Needless to say, the Japanese man had not been having an enjoyable time all this while because for some reason, this year's winter had been considerably harsher, and the man found himself walking through chilly winds as he trudged to and fro. He sighed and released his tight grip on his bedsheets. Slipping his slender feet into his slippers, Japan had sighed with content.
He took a moment to crouch down and pet Poochi-kun, who had been awake for a bit already and was already yipping and barking happily as the little dog tagged along behind his master. The oriental nation had tidied his bed before he trudged himself down the hall sluggishly, rubbing his eyes sorely. He glanced at the clock. Six in the morning and the sun was already so high up. Trying his best not to slouch, Kiku had settled with some of the leftover sushi and and noodles that he had left in the refrigerator, grabbing them out hastily and consuming them (after adding a tons load of salt to add flavour, of course.)
And then it finally dawned upon him. Hurriedly, he had stolen a glance at the calendar on the wall as he threw his window open, hearing the delightful sound of birds chirping and of course the wonderous feeling of that light breeze in the air. He glanced at the cherry blossom tree in his garden. Soon enough it would grow and the pretty pink sakuras would bloom. This signified one, and only one thing.
Spring had come.
Kiku smiled.
