Original Character Application
My name is Mylex and I am 16 years old. I want to join this site because I really enjoy roleplaying and I found this site through our advertisement buttons. I have been roleplaying for 2 years and I normally post between the 500 words mark. Here is my application:
Full Character Name: Veata Chea
Representing Country: Cambodia
Age: 802 years but her appearance and attitude gives off the misconception that she’s only 17 years old.
Gender: Female
Religion: An Atheist at the moment but in the past she was a Buddhist
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Status: Single
Occupation: Summoner. Due to her small stature, this female is unable to be brought into the front line of many battles. Her endurance however is something that works well to her advantage; as a summoner, one needs a lot of endurance in order to tie their lives and bring into being not only their summonings but to retain this physical form and whatever damage may be brought onto these beings. It is a dangerous occupation known for killing many in the past that have attempted such a thing but Cambodia has, thus far, proven herself to be an exceptional summoner. For the most part, her three strongest summons are the beings of Hell known as Cerberus, Ifrit, and Diablos. These hellish summonings have given her the title, “Hell’s Child.” Besides her summoning abilities, the nation is a student of kickboxing.
Strengths:
Innocence/Oblivious
Cambodia’s strongest trait is what one would consider as a gift and a hindrance. She is an open and friendly girl, not understanding the dangers of the world that she is a part of, and this often leads to her befriending others easily. Her innocence does more than draw other nations in though; it has also brought the girl into what can only be considered as an oblivious state. This leaves her free with the ability to deter comments that don’t please her even if she doesn’t realize that she is being insulted.
Strong Willed
More often seen as stubborn by others, Cambodia is actually strong willed. She is not quick to give up in difficult situations nor is she willing to cry in front of people for any reason. A hard past has forced her into a person that is not easy to beat down. In the hardest of situations, she is the one that stands straight and takes anything head-on.
Physically Strong
As a student of Pradal Serey, a form of kickboxing that originated in her home, Cambodia is an unusually strong girl. This contradicts with the image her personality often gives off but when angered or annoyed it is not surprising to see an unconscious person in seconds.
A Good Memory
Cambodia has a very good visual and audio memory. She can recall conversations that may have occurred months ago that most others would have deemed unimportant…of course, this could be considered as a curse to those that would rather not recall the incidents.

Weaknesses:
Dependent
She may be strong willed but Cambodia is also horribly dependent on the other nations to care for her. Her life, until just recently, was spent in the care of either France, Vietnam, or Thailand despite her age. This life of being cared for by others constantly leaves her with the inability to watch after herself unless there is absolutely nobody else that she can run to. It has also left her with the irrational fear of being alone.
Lack of Personal Space
If Cambodia was lacking in only her personal space, she might just get by in life but the issue is, she doesn’t. Personal space hasn’t ever been big on her radar and she holds absolutely no regard for it…nor does she realize how uncomfortable she makes some people so there is no way of telling her that.
Needs Things Said Bluntly
Cambodia needs for things to be told to her bluntly and upfront or else she will not understand. She is not subtle to start with nor does she comprehend subtly of other people; even if one thinks that what is being said is obvious, she won’t get it. This obliviousness has often left her as the last person to learn the latest events occurring in the lives of others.

Personality:
Cambodia, despite her age, acts more like a child than she does an adult. Her human family raised her up to be a very loved child but as such, she is extremely dependent and needy of others. The other nations of her past also raised her up with just as much love after the death of her human family; there was no chance for her in such an environment to learn to be independent. This doesn’t bother her at all though when other nations confront her about it. Their opinions don’t usually matter much to her because they are not important to her in her heart.
Her heart is what governs most of her emotions and actions each day. Such a thing has been labeled as impulsive by others but Cambodia sees it as she wishes. She will not allow for others to deter her opinions easily. In her view, she is merely listening to her heart unlike all the others around her…This has led to some trouble though; comments that have been spoken without thought and actions that are taken without plan have led her into more than a few dangerous situations. Combine that with her natural curiosity and one has a recipe for trouble when leaving the girl alone. It doesn’t help either that during dangerous situations, she is more liable to depend on others to get her out unless she is alone.
The interesting thing about Cambodia is that she is actually quite capable of fending and taking care of herself. It is her preference however to let others to clean up the messes and troubles that she leaves in her wake. The fear of being left behind by other nations once again plays a large role in this habit. Her belief is that as long as she doesn’t show how independent she truly is, others will still care for her.
When Cambodia is sad she will mask this sadness and save the tears for a private area if she can help it. Her human father and the nations following him taught her not to show any weakness, only strength. While this has gotten her through many tough times in the past, it has also blocked others from reaching out to her when she is upset.
When she is angry, which is rather easy because of her quick temper, she will act on this anger which has led to the injuries of many. She is also well known for holding grudges that aren’t easily forgotten because of her good memory. When she is happy, she lets the world know with a bright smile on her lips and eyes shining with excitement. It doesn’t take much to make Cambodia happy and the buzz from that usually lasts all day. Because she is so easy to please, a person that prefers low maintenance over high maintenance people find her very enjoyable.
Although constantly happy and cheerful, Cambodia is sensitive to the mood of the room despite her obliviousness. These are the times when she will take on the mood of those she is with or she will try to fix it. Her love of these people is genuine and it drives her insane to see them upset for any reason.
An artistic child, Cambodia has been known to become a little downer when forced to face a reality that doesn’t suit what she wants. Often times she can be found wandering the halls and exploring, curious nature pulling her into more than just a few incidents that have yet to teach the girl a single thing about cautiousness. At the mention of fireworks or anything else that could be a source for adrenaline, the nation is usually all up for it but very rarely does she stop to take a rest. Perhaps her biggest pet peeve is awkward silences; the female just wasn’t made to be able to handle such things and has been known for a random bursts of energy during such times.
Backstory:
Beginnings
Cambodia grew up blissfully unaware of why she was unlike other humans until the day that she met India and China. Both nations had been exploring the nation that seemed to have no child until they came upon her in the alleyways at the age of seven. She was immediately recognized for what she truly was and the two nations set about teaching her this truth. It was a confusing time during her life but very peaceful as the transition between human and nation came easily. For a time, China and India raised her in the comfort of her human father's home but they soon left her five years later. This departure was sudden and unwanted, leaving the girl feeling abandoned and left behind which in later years resulted in her fear of being left behind again.
Pre-War Times
Through China, Cambodia found herself in acquaintance with two neighboring countries, Thailand and Vietnam. For a time the three of them got along quite well but as Cambodia grew older, she found often found herself the object of disputes between the two. Both considered themselves an older sibling to her but neither were willing to share. A rebellious Cambodia also found herself fighting off both of them, her heart still sore from the abandonment of China.
The Occupation of Thailand and Vietnam
Years went by but Cambodia did not become any stronger. Thailand and Vietnam had yet to realize that she wanted neither in her life; they found her rebellious and thought it normal as she grew older. Her constant fights with them eventually led to her being too weak to fight them though and she allowed for their occupation in her home.
Vietnam and Thailand took turns watching after her and occupying her house for years. There were short burst of independence from the two at times but one of the two always came back for her. It was a fulfillment of both a want and a hatred at once.
The Becoming of a French Colony
Cambodia woke up one day and was surprised to find a strange man with blond hair and blue eyes in her house. She had never seen a foreigner before in her life and hid from him for hours in her room. It had been her thought that by the next day he would have left her home…but he didn’t. Every time that she poked her head out, he was leaning against the opposite wall. The strangeness of it all frightened her and she hid from the male constantly despite the hunger that gnawed at her stomach. There was a time though when she poked her head out to find not only him but some food as well in front of her door. Her shyness prevented her from thanking the male as she drew back and this pattern continued for a while on.
After some time, Cambodia found herself becoming more and more bold and curious with this new stranger. One day she drew herself out of her room and clambered onto his lap eagerly. France’s patience had won out; her heart was young and willing to love once again.
The Khmer Rouge
Under France’s care, Cambodia grew from a young girl into a happy young woman. In her heart, he was the most important thing but Cambodia feared that she didn’t show him enough of this love. Everyday she woke up scared that he would leave her and one day, her fears came into reality. France gave her independence, believing that it was time for her to stand on her own and blissfully unaware of her fear.
Not long after, her nation fell into turmoil and pain thanks to a man called Pol Pot. With Pol Pot he brought the ideas of communism and the worst of humanity. Her people began to fight and kill amongst themselves in large scales around this very time. Year after year, Cambodia lived with the image of a bloody massacre that still wakes her up screaming to this day. What he did to her people has left deep scars that she may never heal from.
Japanese Occupation
Cambodia was surprised to wake up one day during the World War II and find a stranger in her home. It had felt like forever to her since she had last had contact with another nation but Cambodia didn’t allow for herself to shy away from Japan. Memories of how quickly France left her still burned strong and Cambodia was determined not to make the same mistake twice. The two fit with each other well, each a complement of another, and Cambodia found herself contented for a time despite the war. Japan protected and helped to heal some of the scars left by the Khmer Rouge.
Vietnamese Occupation
It had been a while since Japan had left her but the horror of the Khmer Rouge had not diminished with time…if anything, they only strengthened. Cambodia was not strong enough to withstand him much longer and she eventually turned to an old face to protect. Vietnam still remembered her as the child she had been forced to give to France and came willingly to the girl’s protection.
The Present
In the year of 1993, Cambodia finally freed herself from the pains and horrors of the nations and of the Khmer Rouge. Her independence had finally come to her and with time, Cambodia found those atrocious memories beginning to fade. It was in her nature to withstand and move on and that’s exactly what she did. The nation was smart enough to realize that it would take some time to heal and she would have to depend on other nations to help her but she was contented with that. One day she would be strong enough that the other nations would need her…
An important thing to note is that it is around this time that technology and such was introduced into her country however, it has not been a very strong "industry" thus far. The people, used to their traditions, have held firm beliefs in the magic that has been here since the very beginning.
Sample Post:
A yawn darted through Cambodia’s lips as she leaned against the couch casually. There was another flash of light and the man was once again too close to for comfort. His camera light was too bright, it blinded her eyes at a distance so it didn’t help that he was in her face. She wanted to kick him away but she could see her Pa out of the corner of her eye, a knowing look in his eye as he gave a small shake of his head.
It was hard for her to see the points of such events like this but it was what her Pa wanted. He had looked so proud earlier that morning when he had announced a photographer was coming to take pictures of his little girl. That happy gleam in his eye was something that she hadn’t been willing to snatch away. He hardly looked happy anymore and Cambodia didn’t want to be the one that blocked him from something that he hadn’t felt for a while .Besides, she had thought it would have been fun at the time to look as pretty as the other village girls.
Hours later, Cambodia was beginning to think otherwise. The positions that the foreign photographer had her in were unnatural and uncomfortable. Her body wasn’t as flexible to movement as a cat’s but the photographer clearly thought otherwise. It was driving her insane to bend to his whims but she highly doubted that the photographer would appreciate being kicked in the stomach. They would never get the pictures then that her Pa had promised would always carry this memory.
“One more picture,” the photographer called, motioning with his hands how he wanted the small child to turn.
Cambodia gave an exaggerated roll of her eyes but she obliged. It surprised her though when the photographer motioned for her Pa to come over and place her in his lap. Every other picture had been a single picture of just her, it pleased her to know that the memory of Pa would also be in this picture.
Her short legs gave an excited kick as Pa stared down at her with proud brown eyes. His arms wrapped around her comfortably and pulled her close. They both gave a bright smile, smiles that barely fit their face and reflected just how close they were and then there was a flash.
Cambodia gave a small smile as she ran her fingers over the photograph many years later. Looking back at it now, she was very glad that she had taken those pictures with her Pa. The day that they had come, her family had opened the envelopes eagerly while she played in the garden. She hadn’t cared much for the pictures at the time but years later, she was very appreciative of them.
Pa was long dead now but he must have known back then, he must have known that she would outlive him far longer than a normal person. It had killed her to go to his funeral when she was still so young, killed her to realize that she couldn’t go up and talk as if he was her adoptive daughter because the people there had known her as a child. They might have hurt her if they had known that she didn’t age like them so she had had to go the funeral under the guise of a niece. Not being able to walk up to the people and tell them how much she had loved her Pa was one of the hardest things of her life.
He must have known that too because when she came back to sort through the belongings, one of her older brothers had handed her a small box. There had been an envelope on top of all the objects and when she had opened it, she had found numerous photos of their little family. The memories attached to each photo had made her smile and laugh. That had probably been his very goal from the start.
Cambodia gave a respectful bow to her father’s grave as she pocketed the small photo. She could have said thank you to him, she could have thanked him for everything he had ever done for her but Cambodia remained silent. The emotions spilling from her heart was something that her father could feel no matter where he was. Let him feel those emotions instead of trying to put words on them.
Her love for him would always be stronger than her words anyways.
